In this paper, we deal with the language situation and the position of French in
Mauritania. For political and ideological reasons, the use of French is declining and it is being replaced by the Arabic language. The black population, who defended the French language in the past, did not feel sufficient support from France. It is currently concentrating rather on the improvement of the position of its own languages than on the defense of the French language.
